Douglas Edwards, b. 1954
Douglas Edwards is a contemporary painter based in Hamilton, Ontario. Edwards graduated from Ontario College of Art in 1979, also studying in Florence, Italy at off-campus studies and the Academy of Fine Art. Edwards specializes in landscape painting and continues to explore new territory in subject and style, and is always finding means to expand his field of expression. His paintings and original prints can be found in numerous public, corporate and private collections. In speaking of his own work, Edwards writes:
“The passion I have for painting shows in my work. I revel in unleashing the subconscious side of my brain when I paint. I am a good draftsman and colourist. I feel I’ve pretty much mastered the technical side of drawing and painting. Now I like to let that side take care of itself while I explore the feeling of paints mixing together, allowing different shapes and textures to emerge when they weren’t necessarily planned. It’s much more interesting and fun, and the paintings are much more interesting to look at over a long period of time. I don't focus on the small details in my art as I tend to concentrate on the overall effect or the ‘big picture’. With my more abstract works I let things happen and allow the painting to lead me so I have to trust my instincts and satisfy my artistic curiosity. No one, in my opinion, should have to restrict himself to churning out the same kind of art all the time, either, like an assembly line. I pride myself on painting a variety of subjects like nudes, landscapes, figures, florals, and abstracts… I don’t recall Monet restricting himself to one subject. I hope that’s reflected in my art. The world is just too vast and interesting for me to worry about the continuity of my “brand”, or to be afraid of making mistakes. I’d rather throw the rulebook out the window and allow each painting to be fresh, creative and unique.”
