Malcolm Rains, 1947
With roots in classical Greek art, architecture and mythology, Malcolm Rains explores balance and harmony and even an austerity in his elegant paintings. Inspired by the Baroque painter Juan Sanchez-Cotan, Rains uses intense light and shadow, precise imagery and pristine surfaces. His artwork – whether figurative or abstract -- seeks a mystical or conceptual connection with the viewer.
Born in England, Malcolm Rains emigrated with his family to Canada in 1955. After studies in architecture at the University of Toronto and University of Detroit, he completed a degree at the Ontario College of Art in 1974 where he received a conceptual art education and concentrated exclusively on sculpture.
Malcolm Rains' work has met with uncommon success. He has had many solo exhibitions over the past twenty years. His sculpture has been shown at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Global Affairs Canada and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. His long list of collectors includes corporations from the Bank of Tokyo to Nabisco to the Xerox Corporation.
